    Default Disappearing Emails

Over the last couple of days, incoming POP3 NTL (Virgin Media) emails have been arriving in my inbox as usual and alerting me. When I go to the inbox, the headers are there but after about 2 seconds and before I can click on them to read them, they just disappear ! I've not knowingly altered anything for this to be suddenly happening but I did upgrade to Android 2.2 a few days ago if that has any relevance at all.

I've even deleted and recreated the account but it still happens.

Although I can go to the Virgin Media site and get the emails via webmail, I naturally prefer to read them via the Mail program on my phone as usual.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    HTC Desire.

UPDATE : After more testing, it seems to be when a refresh is done, either an automatic one based on time (5 mins in my case) or a manual one. When a refresh happens, any email in the inbox, either read or unread, gets deleted !

Exactly the same here. Problem also exists with Sky email accounts. Exchange accounts seem to be uneffected

Certainly seems to be occurring after a refresh or when switching between email accounts.

Also seems to correspond to the update to android 2.2.

    Any news of a fix??

I can also confirm this problem. I only noticed it after I added additional email accounts, as I now have 3 accounts on the phone (Virgin Media, Gmail and one for my own web site).

A few minutes ago I got a notification that I had 4 new emails, all of which were sent to the same email address, and when I switched to that email address's inbox, the 4 emails were there, but 3 of them disappeared before I had chance to read them. I then Googled for "Desire disappearing emails", which brought me here.

Silverback - I seem to have found a fix for this problem. I switched to using IMAP instead of POP3 and mail is no longer disappearing, at least, it hasn't happened yet!

The first thing you need to do is log into Virgin's webmail service and go to Settings - Forwarding and POP/IMAP and enable IMAP.

You can find the relevant incoming mail server settings for IMAP, depending on whether you have an @ntlworld, @virginmedia etc. email address here: -

    http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...ICLE_ID=105623

On the phone, all you need to do now is edit the incoming server settings for your account to change them from POP3 to IMAP.

If you use an email client on your PC, rather than using webmail, I would also advise switching to IMAP. If you use Windows Live Mail, follow these settings, making note of the one thing you need to change which I will post below the link: -

    http://email.about.com/od/livemailde..._get_gmail.htm

Virgin are using Gmail for email now, but one difference between standard Gmail and Virgin's implementation is the name of the Trash folder. With Virgin email that's called Bin, so if you follow that guide, substitute the word "Bin" (without quotes of course) in place of "Trash" when you are entering in the folder names in the IMAP tab in WLM.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot, Sigma.......made the Virgin Media emails IMAP and although I still can't SEND emails from that account (I never managed to have that before anyway), I've tested the incoming results and everything works fine.....as it should of course. I'm not touching my PC setup as it works just fine so if it's not broke.......
    Thanks again.

    No problem mate.

You can't send email with a Virgin Media account unless you are connecting to their mail server via a Virgin line, which is why it doesn't work on your phone. To be able to send mail, set the outgoing mail server to that of your mobile contract service provider. For example, if you're using T-Mobile in the UK, set the outgoing mail server details to this: -

    Login required: No
    SMTP server: smtp.t-email.co.uk
    Security type: None
    Server port: 25

If you're not using T-Mobile, you can Google for the server details.

    Hi Guys, a noob here.

I have a complete, tested solution for everyone who has experienced this. I am using pop3 on my Desire (running Froyo) to pull my Virgin Media email down to both the phone and also Outlook on my desktop pc.

I was having exactly the same problems as all of you are with disappearing emails shortly after being downloaded to my Desire's inbox. However, I have fixed this problem for Virgin Media / ntlworld / blueyonder customers, here's how......You don't need change to Imap either.

The fault does not lie with the phone for starters. The fault lies on the server!

What you need to do is this. On both your clients (phone and pc), you need to alter the account username as per the following example..... instead of richardbranson@virginmedia.com you need to change it to recent:richardbranson@virginmedia.com. Notice the addition of "recent:" before the username. Do this in account settings in outlook (or windows mail) and also the phone account settings. Obviously substitute your username for richard branson, that was just an example.

My email is now working perfectly without any of them getting deleted when the phone syncs with the server.

Only thing is this. The first time you sync phone and PC after doing this, both your email clients will pull down all your messages from the last 30 days. Subsequent syncs will not do this again. It only happens once. So just delete all the "old" messages it pulls down (on both your phone and pc) and your sorted!!! No more vanishing emails. Its worked for me folks. Any queries, give us a shout.

    Happy days :-)
