I want it. Is it available for these phones officially or is a hack of some sort necessary?

You will have to be patient it is on HTC's list as an update

If you root your phone you can try an early build from XDA developers.
I have tried some and mostly for everyday use its OK, but no-one has sorted out the camera issues so you would need to live with a dodgy camera until thats sorted. I would try with of these two. [ROM][25-01-2012][4.0.3 AOSP] Virtuous Quattro RC3 - xda-developers or [ROM]18-02-2012 | IceColdSandwich 4.0.3 - 3.0.0 | BLACK PANTHER EDITION - xda-developers both work fairly well.
The same forum has a guide on how to gain root access to your phone but it does have some risk, bricking your device. Your choice, I haven't looked back
