Right my Hearties, cop a load of this, rang HTC to send desire in for repair, as suggestion in my previous e-mail to HTC, the lady said theres nothing they can do as thats the phone and that am getting good usage out of it (LOL). she gave me the line of... my colleague has one and he get only 12 hours from it, yeah right.

so i've bought the extended battery 2400mah (got it today) watch this space.... am wanting to get aleat 24hours of use from it, not 12 hours.

if this dont work, i will extremely disgusted, diappointed, upset & and totally p****d with HTC and will be 80% tempted to move over to iphone 4 (once its slightly stable).

right well, I sent my phone into HTC for this exact problem, sub 20 hour standby with 0 use and they sent it back with 'no fault found' - which is utter s**te really. So now im left to assume its the battery and am going to get another one for whatever it costs. Really disappointed in a phone that runs dry in this time without being used.

    I don't get it...

I understand that when the phone is new, you're all excited about using it so the battery life will be significantly shorter. However now, after a week, it's only lasting about 12 hours.

The other day, I unplugged it at 12.30pm only to have it at 30% by 10pm. Now I know apps and updates all drink the battery, but this phone is designed to be used as a smart phone. If I wanted everything off, I would've kept my Nokia 6110 (which never missed a beat and on its second battery, lasted me 4 days at least). I'm calling HTC tomorrow to see what they have to say, along with a few other bugs. Every time I get in my car, I charge it to avoid it going flat as sometimes I'm out most of the day and I can't really run the risk of having a flat phone. If HTC doesn't give me a reasoning/solution, I'm going to call the ACCC and see what can be done from a legal perspective (e.g. refund).

I got so exasperated looking for a new battery for my HTC Touch2 ( My second HTC after HTC Viva) i was "seduced" to get Desire by this chap at the Hp shop. Read the glowing reviews on the internet (with very passing and brief mention of the ho-hum battery life). Luckily my credit card was blocked so i couldn't make the purchase.

I went to the shop again today(after unblocking my card) and for some reason decided not to get it since they have the battery for my Touch2 after all.

All these stories of the dud battery is exactly what i have right now with my Touch 2! Even entry level Viva was more reliable battery wise. So why should i upgrade to Desire??!!! It is a real concern when you are on outstation trips continuously. HTC, you just lost me on this one. Can anyone recommend me a good smart phone with decent battery life same price range as Desire??? Doesn't have to be HTC but Windows Mobile 6.5 is a must.

I'm lucky to make it to 3pm with mine, (I make few calls one or two texts and wi-fi and GPS off), I always have a spare fully charged battery and I always plug into car charger, the battery life is horrendous; my old Blackberry could go for a few days of heavy use on one charge.

I'm one of the majority that are not having any battery issues - I get about 2 days of use before requiring a charge with 3G, GPS, location, always on data, several short phone calls, a dozen texts, using the Maps app a couple of times, etc. This is my typical use and battery life is similar to my iPhone 3G.

However, if you're one of the unlucky ones, try the method that's bolded at the top of this thread where you calibrate the phone for the battery, many report it works:

I had a really bad battery draining issue; 10% - 15% per hour. At one point I was ready to throw my desire at the wall. I thought I'd wait to see if things improved with froyo. I gave up waiting for t-mobile so I unbranded and updated to froyo myself. I suspected that certain apps were killing my battery, possibly due to partial wake lock? so I chose not to update facebook, google maps and twitter. I also did the following, which I found on another forum:

    1. Charge your Desire for 8 hrs or so (overnight is easy) when the Desire is ON. After this you'll notice that the green (fully charged) light is on.
    2. Unplug your Desire and turn it OFF. Plug it back in and you should notice that instead of the green light you get the orange light which indicates that actually the battery isn't fully charged. Charge for an hour like this.
    3. Unplug again and turn ON, turn OFF straight away and charge for another hour.

I now get 30 - 35 hours out of my desire with moderate use, I'm not sure which of these did the trick but I'm a lot happier now I get 5 times more life out of my battery.

I've only had my Desire for about a week so please bare with me...

Initially I found that taking it off charge at 8am would give me battery life until about 6pm with moderately high use. However I have now installed the HTC mobile widget on my home screen.. I've only used the widget for a day, but have had amazing results. With Wifi, bluetooth, GPS and 3G turned off I have just got 35 hours (genuine). During that time I did use WiFi from time to time (only turned on whilst using it) and I had "Sync" turned on!

If you need to turn all of that off to use the phone, then you might as well go back to a Motorola Razr or something else that doesn't use 3G, have data, or a touchscreen. What good is a smartphone if you can't use it for its intended purpose?

A better solution is to find out why your battery life is so short. Either it's a calibration issue, a defective phone, or a defective battery. I get 2 days (~48 hours) out of mine as long as I'm not out geocaching which uses the GPS and screen heavily so it eats battery. But for my typical use I mentioned above, I get 2 days from my Desire. Note that I don't use Bluetooth or WiFi much, but aside from that, everything else is on and being used all day & night. Compared to an iPhone 3G, battery life is about the same and I use the Desire about the same as the iPhone 3G. I have no complaints about battery life.

Have you tried the calibration procedure yet?

Try installing apps one at a time and checking battery stats. If you install an app and Android system is using the most battery during moderate use (ie not using gps or WiFi) chances are its the app you just installed causing problems
