Default External microphone for video recording

Please, I have a burning question which only needs a simple yes or no! Next month I can get a new cellphone and were it not for the horrendous soundquality when recording video, I would definately take an HTC Desire (HD or not). But the sound of the HD video's is so dramatically bad I am thinking about taking a Samsung instead. Except...

Is it possible to attach an external 3.5mm or USB microphone to this device to use it for videorecording? I thought I saw this with the iPhone, but Im allergic to Apple. So is it possible to record video using an external microphone?

Thanks for your information about this. Would help me alot!

    bye

Default I want connect an external mic to my HTC Desire

Hi, i m looking for exactly the same thing.

Does anybody know if there is a possibility to plug an external microphone and use it for recording video and audio files into the headphone mini jack.

If not, is there a way to connect it via usb ? like the audio combo i saw on the net.
It's a big adaptor with 2 audio-in 2 audio-out and one usb. But it is not compatible with desire ?

I'd like just to record acoustic music with my mini jack mic.
I'm sure that is possible but how ?

If i don't find any solution i will brutalize my headset for make a splitter audio in / audio out by myself, but i'm not sure if HIFI Recorder will record with the right audio in , same for videos.
I m afraid that video recorder have a very low sampling frequency, so the sound will be bad. But wi the application HIFI Recordings it may work

    Any solutions ?

No help here I'm afraid. I found this thread looking for the exact same thing.
Hopefully this *bump* will help find an answer. I'll post back if I find anything elsewhere.

    Hey!

I'm also looking for the same thing. I might end up getting a separate dedicated audio recorder for recording meeting and lecture audio. If I find anything that seems to work I'll post it. It would be sooo sweet to be able to plug something right into the 3.5mm and get it to line into the voice recorder app and be compatible with video.

Hopefully we come up with a solution,
    Ian

Default Solution for External Microphone - Line-in for HTC Desire

Hi guys, I just did some testing and it was good, I've had the same question for months (really more interested to use the desire as a line-in recording device). I took the TRRS to RCA cable from my camcorder, in the RCA end it has the left (white), right (red) and video (yellow) conectors; the first thing I did was to identify the output channels, I connected the white and red connectors to the tape-in channels in my mixer, played something on the phone and got only signal in the left channel (listening through headphones), I switched the red connector with the yellow and then I got the stereo sound.

The next step was recording, I disconnected the white and yellow plugs and connected the red one to the tape-out left channel in my mixer, turned on the "Hi-Q MP3 Recorder" in my android, and started recording, I had to adjust my mixer level to stay in the "green zone" of the recording volume and then I could record the output of my mixer directly on the phone, and in mp3 format!. I got a kinda high hissing sound inthe background but it was a raw "on the fly" recording, that can probably be improved.

To use an external microphone, you can try purchasing one of the TRRS to RCA cables and a RCA (female) to TS (female) adapter, connect your microphone and give it a try (depending on the cable configuration you need to try and see which color is the right one for the mic). One of those powered condenser lavalier microphones could be a good choice, especially if you can control the output level.

I hope it helps, I'll try to improve the quality of the recording as I want to use the phone as a recording device for live gigs (of course, only as an "audio log" to review and correct mistakes, it is a mono recording and I don't expect high quality here).

IMPORTANT: TO USE THE DESIRE AS A "LINE IN" RECORDING DEVICE I USED A MIXER AND STARTED WITH NO OUTPUT AT ALL, I TURNED THE RECORDING SOFTWARE IN THE DESIRE AND SLOWLY INCREASE THE OUTPUT LEVEL IN THE MIXER UNTIL I GOT THE RECORDING LEVEL I WANTED, IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL IT MAY BE POSSIBLE THAT YOU COULD BLOW UP YOUR MIC-IN INTERFACE IN THE DESIRE. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

    Default headset budy

Hey guys, I have been looking for this quite a lot and i found "headset buddy" on Amazon. If you have 15 spare $ and don't want to play with soldering this adapter will give you possibility of connecting any usual pc headset and the external mic as well

If you will not find it, try phrases like "TRRS, jack adapter, connector, 4 pin jack, TRRS to TRS adapter and you should get something. Hope this will help you. I use my desire HD with external mic and the sound is great, i also use this for the guitar as a tuner and guitar effect.

    cheers,

I bought this: Gembird Mini Compact Laptop Notebook Microphone: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories a few days ago (a little 3.5mm mini jack mic). Thought I'd be able to just plug it in and play (because lets face it, the inbuilt mic is shocking).
To the point: It just registers as headphones. When recording video/audio my Desire continues to use the integrated microphone.
Anyone have any similar experience or any suggestions?

    thanks

    Default Quick update

My desire registers the mic only when pushed part-way into the socket. I don't know whether this is the fault of the phone or the mic.
