"Fail to access PIM folder."
I get this error when trying to sync my HTC Desire with Outlook 2010 connected by USB. I can't find anyone that have had this problem before. Please help!
Yes, I have tried rebooting both computer and phone, the error still occurs.
My phone: HTC Desire A8181
Andrioid version: 2.29.405.5
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-gf5a401c
HTC Sync version: 3.0.5511

I fixed this error by having my Outlook profile open. The profile that I sync with between Outlook and the DHD.

I think I read somewhere that there are two possible causes for this error:
1. As Gweeep says, you need to have Outlook running in order for Sync to talk to it - I guess that's particularly relevant if you use passwords for your Outlook folder
2. In HTC Sync you may need to select the Outlook folders for Contacts and Calendar rather than just use the default settings

Did you find a solution?
I installed HTC Sync on a Win XP pc with Outlook 2007, no protection on mail profiles or .pst files, no passwords or protected dyrectories, but it always display "fail to access PIM profile", simply selecting Outlook as data source, and clicking on "options".
In control panel - mail, I tried to create a new mail profile an switch to it like default, but nothing changed...
Than I tried to install HTC Sync on a notebook with Win 7 and it access correctly to Outlook 2007 data!
...but I need to use it in the pc with XP, what can i do? I read that someone formatted his pc but HTC Sync still not working... Help me please!!

Outlook Upgrade caused my problem
I experienced this error too after I upgraded from Outlook 2007 to 2010. I solved the problem by using the options in both People and Calendar to specifically select the folders I wanted to sync. These hadn't changed but obviously the HTC sync software wasn't sophisticated to know this.
(I still can't sync my contacts with Google though, bah humbug!)

Same issue with my HTC legend + Windows XP + Outlook 2003.
HTC worked fine with same config on my old PC, but with new one it says "Fail to access PIM profile" when I click "options" either in "Calendar" or "Contacts" tab.
I also tried Android sync, and seems the issue is similar - it can't access the "PIM"... Any idea what may be wrong?

Well, so far so good.
Finally I fixed the issue at my PC.
In outlook go |Help|Detect and repair... Somehow it helped.
Hope, will be useful.
Cheers.
