Ok... this is now puzzling. I just don't really get why it's not detecting your phone. Everything seems to be configured properly.

Can I just confirm that you didn't have your AV running when you installed Sync (it warns you during installation to disable AV)?

Also, as we seem to be stuck with a connectivity issue, I know you can get USB cables that are charge only, rather than data cables. I know I asked you about the cable but just to check, you got your phone from a phone shop (rather than 2nd hand)? I.e. is there any chance that the cable might be charge-only?

Other than that, the only thing I can think of is that the latest version of HTC Sync doesn't work reliably with froyo. I think it would be good to try whatever version came with your phone (see below).

In regard to 8), the HTC Sync .exe should be in the root of your SD card. The version should be in the filename. If you don't know how to view the contents of your SD card, you'll need to install a file explorer (I personally like ES file explorer - it's free from Android Market). Alternatively, just pull the SD card out of your phone and pop it in a card reader, then you'll be able to browse the card and copy the file off it (if you need to).

Ok, the Adobe Air version is 2.6.0.19120 - Not sure if it is the latest.

As for Device Manager, I have no 'Connection' in it.

With the AV issue, I know windows firewall was off, and HTC Sync was in programs that are allowed to pass through. As for other AV, this computer is my brother's computer, so I'm not sure what other AV he has. I will check with him if he has any on this computer.

Yeah, I got the phone from a phone shop (T-Mobile) so I don't think the cable could be charge only.

Also, with the HTC Sync on my SD Card, I do not know where to find it.

    Thanks

On the adobe site it's 2.7

My adobe air.dll file version is 2.7.0.19530

I suggest you uninstall adobe air, download the latest installer and update:

    Adobe - Adobe AIR

With the AV issue, I know windows firewall was off, and HTC Sync was in programs that are allowed to pass through. As for other AV, this computer is my brother's computer, so I'm not sure what other AV he has. I will check with him if he has any on this computer.
Ok... AV = antivirus and a firewall, though security related, isn't antivirus software. So given HTC specifically say to turn off AV during installation, I think we need to find out what if any AV is installed/running on the PC. Can you ask him?

Alternatively, if you RIGHT-click on a file (e.g. the adobe air installer), is there anything in the menu list which sounds something like "scan with..."? Most AV software allows you to scan a single file on demand, so I'm hoping we will see an entry in the right-click (context) menu...

If AV is running on the machine then we will need to turn it off, completely uninstall HTC Sync... then re-install, with the AV software still disabled.

Yeah, I got the phone from a phone shop (T-Mobile) so I don't think the cable could be charge only.
    agreed

Also, with the HTC Sync on my SD Card, I do not know where to find it.
Can you see what's on the SD card? If you browse the card's contents, HTC Sync should be at the bottom of the initial file/folder list. It shouldn't be in any folder i.e. it should be visible as soon as you start looking at the stuff on the SD card.

Another thought... do we know that the USB port(s) on the laptop are actually working? Can you test one? You could use a memory stick or perhaps an external card reader (if you have one). This also makes me wonder whether the USB port is working properly on your mobile phone. I just stumbled across this webpage:

HTC Desire S USB-bricked? Only charges via USB HTC Desire Fanatics

I'm not sure how we can test this. I reckon you really need someone whose HTC Sync definitely works and then get them to see if the phone is detectable. Maybe see if an engineer at a Tmobile shop can test/check it for you?

In the meantime, all I think we can do is try our best to make sure all software is up-to-date (i.e. get latest version of adobe air) and working properly + make sure that any AV is switched off and that HTC Sync is installed without any issues.

    Cheers,

Ok, the AV on the computer is Norton AntiVirus (although not sure which version etc). I am not sure which things to turn off etc (I can turn Auto-Protect off, Internet Worm Protection and Spyware then some email and messaging settings.) I have looked around on the internet to see, however, have had no success.

As for HTC Sync on my SD Card, I found it on the SD Card they supplied. (Downloading as we speak - will report back)

The ports are working because I regularly use my memory stick - no problems.

Hmm, about the USB port on my phone. I'm pretty sure it works fine, but will still check.

Thanks for the help so far

Ok, downloaded the Sync on my SD Card and opened. Turned off all AV and Firewalls - still no success!
Even tried the latest version of Sync and still nothing.
    Its really bugging me now.

Ok... the first thing I would suggest would be to NOT run 2 different versions of HTC Sync in parallel.

    • Turn off / disable Norton
    • uninstall each version of HTC Sync, etc (try taking the drivers off first)
      • you can do this from the start menu/programs list but afterwards check in Programs and Features to make sure all have been removed

    • Install old version of HTC Sync (from your SD), with AV still disabled

    then see what happens.

If that doesn't work then there are a couple of other things to consider...

Anyway, out of curiosity, what version of HTC Sync was on your SD card?

    Cheers,

    Gary

PS sorry to hear that you're irritated now - don't blame you tbh.

Ok, I did that and it still didnt find Sync.
It was the older version - 2.0 something.
Regarding the Task killer, I used to, but I uninstalled a while ago.

If that's the case, can you just double-check/confirm that you have no apps (task killers, utilities, security software, etc) that could be interfering with PC Sync on your phone (as that would explain no connectivity)?

Ok, I did that and it still didnt find Sync.
Do you mean you tried uninstalling all the HTC software without Norton running, then re-tried the old HTC Sync version? Also, unless it's just the anti-virus package, you may have a Norton firewall to disable too...

Nope, do not have anything that could be interfering with PC sync.
I uninstalled HTC Sync with Norton off, installed the sync on my SD Card with Norton off, and it still doesnt work. I'm not sure whether I have a Norton firewall, but will check.
