The best and the easiest way to backup your contacts and other data is through HTC Sync to your PC/ Microsoft Outlook (unless you are already synchronizing to Gmail directly) - you'll need this when upgrading your Desire to 2.3 anyway.
The exception being your SMS messages - you'll need to install an app on your phone to backup/restore to/from Gmail.
A copy of HTC Sync can be downloaded from your local HTC Support website.
