Smile GPS Without a Cellular Service

Heya everyone. I'm thinking of buying a used Dream and I read that it has both a standalone GPS and an assisted GPS. Does that mean I'd be able to use the GPS without paying for a cellular plan? I know some phones lock down things like the GPS when you're not paying for cell service.

If I can't use it without cell service, would I be able to use it if I installed something like CyanogenMod?

    Thanks in Advance!

A standalone GPS should be able to operate without cellular plan as long as you have the appropriate mapping software and map set installed.

A GPS needs the map software if you want turn by turn directions, a cellular service will constantly download that information from provider.

I have a Touch HD with Garmin XT installed as my GPS application. Does not require connection to the cellular phone netowrk.

    Thanks for your fast reply

Is there anything like Garmin XT for Android? I've found some apps that cache maps and then let you browse them, but I'm looking for something with turn-by-turn directions.

    Thanks again!

Not having an Android phone I have not explored this. Hoperfully a googgle search will turn up something or perhaps another droid user will be able to help you.

    Cheers

Could you post a link to the apps that cache maps? I don't like paying for the same map data every time, not to mention potential loss of signal while travelling.
