Unhappy Use of USB accessories w/ HTC Smart Phones

Does anyone know if you can kluge a plug & power supply to allow HTC smartphones to see/use USB accessories, in particular USB thumbdrives??? It seems that there ought to be a way to supply the power necessary externally, but I'm not aware of all the pitfalls....Hope someone out there is smarter than I & tried this B4 :?:

Don't think it's possible (because of the issue of powering the usb device), but instead of a thumbdrive why not just get a good sized microsd card and carry your usb cable around for the phone?

Well DUH...sometimes the best answers are right in front of you...I assume that I can connect to a PC & have it recognize the phone as a mass storage device w/o having to install any drivers or software on the host computer??? Thanks for a common sense approach ALTHOUGH the thought of using the usb adapter plug (recharge/audio/??) intrigues me, and would go a long way to answer the other post about using a USB mic. for better voice quality. Would also allow for the use of a biometric reader, a chip enabled card reader, a business card or small page scanner etc...Sounds like it should be easy to supply independant power, but I can't figure it out  Thanks for your help...
