Bloody hell. So that's why my PC has been paging like mad intermittently!
Sod this, I'm taking HTC Sync off.

This is a very serious issue, and has caused me 2 system crashes already under Windows XP.
It's a shame, but I'm forced to remove HTC sync. If this is not fixed the otherwise fantastic Hero is practically useless.

I noticed another related symptom that eats up my performance: my "McAfee on-access scan" shows every 5 seconds access to the file C:\Windows\system32\fsync.log.
So I looked it up, and saw that the file is growing and growing, hundreds of Megabytes. It is hardly possible to open it while it is being extended every 5 seconds. But after deleting it, it started all over again, and when it was still "tiny" I managed to inspect it: it continuously repeats the following lines:

    [ 1:56:22:953]
    [PID:4984.ProcessName:C:\Program Files\HTC\HTC Sync\Mobile Phone Monitor\HTCVBTServer.exe]
    [FunctionName:GetDevices]

    [ 1:56:22:953]
    [PID:4984.ProcessName:C:\Program Files\HTC\HTC Sync\Mobile Phone Monitor\HTCVBTServer.exe]
    [FunctionName:GetConnectedDevices]

I assume: the continuous updates of a file of that size, and virus-scanning it every 5 seconds is one of the reasons that I could hardly open any file any more (opening a simple Word document took more than a minute...).
So my preliminary advice if you want to keep using HTC sync: regularly delete this log file, don't let it grow.

And add me to the list...

MY PC has been running like crap... so I got in the task manager... started googling these processes... and yep htcvbtserver.exe was the culprit.

What a friggin pig of a program that is.

/HTC Sync = uninstalled!!!

Has anybody tested out version 2.08 (recently released) to see if it has the same problems? I'm afraid to, having uninstalled 2.04.

Yes, I installed HTC Sync 2.0.8. At least one problem has been resolved: the number of handles for HTCVBTServer.exe is not growing anymore as before.
But the log file C:\Windows\system32\fsync.log is still extended every 5 seconds, and for that reason also virus-scanned every 5 seconds. See my previous message. I created a small .bat file that I regularly use to delete this file, to prevent it growing to enormous proportions.

I have not yet noticed the dramatic slowing down of my computer that I had before. But I don't know what happens if you keep your PC up and running for many days without restarting it.

I found this thread after running a defrag on my wife's hard drive, in yet another attempt to determine why her machine has been unstable and slow for the past few months, and finding a file C:/windows/system32/fsync.log that was over 1 GB, in 89,722 fragments.

As a software architect, I don't even know where to begin.

Whose brilliant idea was it to write a log file to a system directory? And update it every 5 seconds? And let it grow to over 1 GB in size?

I bet there are thousands of people out there wondering why their computers have mysteriously slowed to a crawl and become unstable.

Her phone seems decent enough, but I will not be recommending HTC products anytime soon. A company that lets something like this out the door has serious quality control issues to resolve.

I am running XP SP2 with 2Gb of RAM. I defragment daily. HTC Sync uses a lot of RAM and causes the cooling fan to run a maximum speed. It also fails to transfer calendar entries from my PC to my HTC Sensation. I am running the latest HTC Sync, which I have to open manually. Any solutions ?
