Default HTC Sync maxes out my memory

I installed HTC Sync 2.0.4 on 2 PC's, one with Vista and one with Windows XP. If I close HTC Sync from my taskbar (I only sync every now and then), some processes keep running in the background. I suppose this is normal because these processes wake up when I connect my HTC Hero to USB. The processes are epmworker.exe, dbgout.exe, HTCVBTServer.exe and FsynSrvStarter.exe.

If I leave my PC unattended for about 24 hours, I find that it is using almost 100% memory and it's paging like crazy. When I count the private bytes in my Task Manager, the numbers don't add up.

I notice that every few seconds, a new FsynSrvStarter process is spawned and killed. The number of handles is about 300000. Normally, my PC only has about 30000 handles. I think that there's an issue with HTC Sync and that it's leaking handles. I mentioned this to HTC support, but they only give crap answers and don't want to look into this issue.

Does anyone else have the same problem? Can anything be done about it?

    I get the same problem.

Task Manager doesn't show HTCVBTServer.exe as using a lot of memory (or VM). However, if I kill it, I find that my free memory climbs dramatically (e.g. 419MB free to 1606 MB free & 248MB free to 1035MB free)!

There is obviously a memory or resource leak in it somewhere.

I have looked at this more closely, and I can confirm that HTCSync leaks handles. HTCVBTServer.exe is the problem. At startup it has a few hundred handles. After about 24 hours it has about 25000 handles. After 3 days this becomes problematic. Now, if I leave my computer on standby for 4 days, it won't wake up again without a hard reset.

HTC really needs to fix this.

Same thing happens to me - HTC Sync kills my computer running Vista 32 bit. Have to kill the process "HTCVBTServer" (or uninstall the whole suit) - then I get back to normal. Love my HTC Hero but the Sync is bad programming! HTC have to fixe this asap!

I do agree. I love my Hero but HTC Sync is rotten and stinks.

Please throw in in the garbage can and create something new. And please do it fast!

I've been wondering why my computer has been acting up lately, swapping all the time etc. All my processes showed low memory usage (I turned on all memory columns in task manager), including htcvbtserver.exe. I decided to Google it today, and came across this. This is horrific! I took a screenshot of my cpu/memory usage a few seconds after I killed htcvbtserver.exe. The graph probably would have been even more dramatic had I not been running several other programs (including many browser windows and photoshop) during this.

I also am enjoying my HTC Hero, but the number of Windows processes and this kind of memory usage is not acceptable. Please fix this asap .

PS: Sorry about the size of the image, it's not a big file though...
PPS: There are 4 CPU graphs because I have a quad core.
PPPS: I didn't alter the image in any way other than cropping it. The only process I ended was htcvbtserver.exe.

This shows ones again that the sync software stinks.

And it is horrible that it only run on Windows. Hero is a Linux device!

I love my Hero, but the Sync is terrible for the non-android os
Number of processes is increasing too ....

I also have this problem and need to kill the htcvbtserver.exe process as it just takes over the PC.

Like the other posters here, looking in TaskManager does not show a large amount of memory assigned to this process but when it's killed +500MB can be freed up easily.

Please fix this as it's ruining the Hero experience.

    +1

HTC Sync 2.0.4 eats my 2Go memory in 2 days only.

The only workaround I knew before coming here was to close the Windows session and opening it again.
