Unhappy HTC Sync runtime error on connect

    Hi everyone

I have a 12-month-old Hero, which was upgraded to Android 2.1 a few months back.

I used to use HTC Sync v2, but now have to use v3 with Android 2.1. The problem is, it doesn't work.

The software installs okay, and the icon sits in the Windows XP system tray, but when you plug in the phone, HTC Sync fires up, the phone says "connected" and HTC Sync crashes:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files\HTC\HTC Sync 3.0\htcUPCTLoader.exe
    abnormal program termination

I also tried the latest version, which came out a few weeks ago too, with the same error.

I've been corresponding with HTC C/S for several weeks with no success. They keep suggesting obvious stuff, like anti-virus software and USB problems. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, I've done integrity checks on Outlook data, I've been through my startups, and made sure all drivers and OS patches are up-to-date.

There's not a lot of software on this laptop (IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R52 with 2GB RAM), and there are no other software issues. I get the feeling that HTC C/S can't help me.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try?

In an attempt to be a good netizen, I'm answering my own question with the solution, which I worked out just now. So much for HTC support - several weeks on, and no real technical help.

I used a system activity monitor to see what was happening before the crash (Process Monitor by Sysinternals). Sync was enumerating music files in the iTunes folders. I moved iTunes out of the My Music folder completely, and the crash stopped!

I moved iTunes back, a few folders at a time, until I isolated one album which was causing the problem - don't ask me why, it didn't look special at all.

I hope that helps someone, and saves them many hours of wasted time.

    Hi,

Thanks for the tip. My HTC Sync failed to start up after upgrade to version 3. The htcUPCTLoader.exe was consuming 100% CPU, HTC indicated "updating libraries". My phone is a HTC Desire. After renaming the iTunes library, and restarting the HTC Sync, I immediately got a connection between Sync and Desire.

    Dr. No.

    Default HTC Sync Crashing

Further to the previous posts, I have just had the 'pleasure' of setting up my new HTC EVO 3D and it suffers from the same problem. My point is, I have NO itune files! I have tried twice installing the software, both from the HTC website and the SD card installed in the phone. The HTC screen says 'No device connected' and as soon as the 'sync' is keyed, the screen crashes and up pops the Microsoft dialogue box 'htc.exe has encountered a problem' etc. After clearing the fatal error message, the HTC screen will not hold until the phone is disconnected from the USB cable. HELP

For anyone who has suffered this problem, I have just cured it by uninstalling Adobe Air 2.7 and installing 2.6 - problem solved! I did take the precaution of rebooting after uninstalling and installing.
