Default Looking to buy magic, some issues, please help if you can :)

    hello all.

i am considering buying the magic, but a few questions, and if some one could help that would be fantastic.
i am looking to buy the device here in japan from DoCoMo, as they are the only ones offering it.

    so the main questions are;

    1) can the gps reciever work without accessing the 3g network for internet service? ie, is there an app that will force it to work as a stand alone gps reciever to work with google maps. ie, no cost.

    2) are there options to set the device to choose from wireless networks using the wifi reciever as opposed to using the internet through the service provider when and if possible??

the way it works here is in japan, i have to subscribe to a service called mopera for all internet related things. so, for my messaging system, it will be an email address that is linked to my phone. in japan thats how messaging works, its all email addresses. there is no sms. anyways, there is a cost for this dependant on how much is written. so both messaging and accessing the net drive up data packets, and thus cost, which i want to avoid. that being the case i will primarly be using my gmail address, and would like it to only send messages through wifi, free, and was just wondering if there were settings or functions to force it to only send messages when connected via wifi, and not to just send the message through the carriers internet access when i press send or something.

if anyone can help with this that would be great. everything else on the device looks fine and what i need.

maybe if someone knows though, how is viewing pdf files on the device? do you have to scroll at all to read from side to side??? that would be very good to know.

ok cool, thank you everyone for the input, MUCH appreciated!!

    mikemaxwell,
you're from Japan, and currently living in Japan? Your name doesn't sound too Japanese at all..

Here's your answer, plus additional advice:

1.] of course not! it's a friggin phone, what do you expect?!? get a GPS device if you just want GPS. If you want a non-phone Android device, then get an Android tablet device. Google-it up and I'm sure you'll find one.

2.] any smartphones which have WiFi, when the WiFi is turned on it'll use WiFi for data transfer rather than using the wireless network. Don't you have one already? Man, how old are you? geezz...

3.] why can't you ask DoCoMo directly rather than asking questions in this forum? I thought DoCoMo is a well known wireless carrier company in Japan that has good customer service reputation, or is it not?

4.] HTC Hero is already launched, it is a more better device than the HTC Magic. If the Hero is offered by DoCoMo, you better grab this one instead of the Magic. Don't know what HTC Hero is?? Open up HTC website then.

5.] HTC Magic is a touch screen smartphone, there's no scrolling up and down using the side bar like you use in your computer! So you touch anywhere on the screen to scroll up and down, that's how it roll.

OMG, just buy one already. And if you don't like it, return it, exchange it, replace it, etc. If the price costs too much for you, either the Magic or the replacement you'd like to buy next in case you hate the Magic, then sell one of your kidney to get a new touch screen smartphone.

    Peace, and out.

    Hello...

I came to this board, looking for general information on the htc devices. After reading this topic, and more importantly the reply by dummy dolls (very fitting name btw), I made this account JUST so that I could respond to your post dummy.

This is my first post here, so I'm gonna try to keep this as clean as possible, but for starters how completely uptight and arrogant are you dummy? First of all this is a FORUM, where people POST and TALK and ASK QUESTIONS. If you have a problem with a question somebody asks, then just don't reply, YOU are not to judge what is a good or bad question, and even less so to do it with attitude.

Secondly, I will be the first to point out that both of his questions are very valid!

1: A phone that has A-GPS, CAN use the mobile network to pinpoint your location faster, but it does not have to do so. For anyone interested just slightly more than the average joe in how his or her phone works, finds this an interesting question (I for one), not to mention that even though the data traffic over the gsm network when A-gps is used is extremely little (6kb per packet), this is STILL a valid question for ppl who might not have an unlimited data plan too.

Secondly, I personally would expect nothing less than having the option of NOT using the gsm-network if I so please, I think it is no more than reasonable to allow the user to have this kind of control over his device.

2: Depending on how a phone is constructed, it MAY or MAY NOT use the wifi connection atumatically, for someone who is not familiar with android phones, this is not something they might know about (me included), and so the question is valid YET AGAIN. Moreover, a better response from you (as an android-familiar) would have been to actually tell the guy what happens if there are in fact several wifi connections available, would a popup come up allowing you to pick which network to use? Naturally it should (imho), but is it a given that it will when I am unfamiliar with the OS in question? No, which is why this is a valid question to post in a FORUM.

These are both good and interesting questions in my opinion. Now, if you have nothing better to do than to showoff and try to make people look like idiots for asking simple questions on a forum you need to get grip!

THIS IS WHAT FORUMS ARE FOR AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN DO NOT RESPOND; or even better GET THE F* OUT you sad little wannabe!

Sorry for the harsh language, but this really pissed me off, someone comes looking for help and gets a smartass respond like this. Pathetic.

aww, look what the cat dragged in..
it's another frigtard (friggin+retard) who just crawl out of his mother's basement in Sweden, and his name is Andreas Miller ladies and gentlemen. Apparently this 28 year-old brat live too much in comfort inside his own timid world, so when he read my ingenious post reply for 'mikemaxwell', he thinks I'm a bad person.

Well, Mr. Andreas little dickhead Miller, welcome to the real world and smell the real stinking air in forums all over the world wide web. Do you think I'm being harsh and a smartass? Actually, I am, but at least I'm being honest and tell the truth, in fact I believe 'mikemaxwell' is satisfied with my reply so that even he doesn't complain like you. Just so you know; you do complain & whine like an anally fucked up little girl.

Oh, and one more thing.. By the time I write this post, there have been over 148 viewers, do you see anyone else complain on how I reply? huh? huh?

I'll try to keep this as short and as clean as possible, don't really like gettin' my hands dirty writing a reply for a dickhead like you anyway. Yeah of course this is a forum for asking questions, but whenever a not so good question pops out, the poster must realize that he/she must face the entire community consist of nice and not so nice people who will answer in their own fashion. So, who the fuck do you really think you are to judge how and what kind of words people want to write in their answer?

Secondly, I will be the first to point out how lame your long explanations of A-GPS and WiFi. Honestly, do you think 'mikemaxwell' and other users really give a shit about it? What they all really-really care is it works, what they really are looking for is a simple and short answer. So overall, your long and exhausting explanation shows how sad little smartass wannabe you really are.

GPS is like its meaning: Global Positioning System, it has many use and most of all is for digital map. Still confused? Just google it up and read all about it in Wikipedia. What the hell is your point trying to explain it in long sentences?!? Of course its different from using data transfer over 2G/EDGE/3G wireless, anyone doesn't know this is a moron (yes, that includes you Andreas stupid Miller).

WiFi in smartphone? Of course any today's new smartphone OSes will inform the users if there are wireless networks around the vicinity, everybody knows this! This has already became a standard feature for WiFi in every smartphones for years now. Oh yeah, I forgot; those who never have new smartphone (either too attached to their old phones or too poor to buy a new sophisticated one like you) don't know this. My bad..

Are those mobile technologies questions valid in this forum, hell yeah, who says they don't? Just you alone Mr. Andreas smartpant Miller. I never said they're not, you're just making it up so you can say "valid" over and over again (only Swedenese idiots love that word btw). So much for your cum laude degree you got from Quinnipiac University, in Hamden. *chuckles*

Android is an open mobile platform, so it is up to each smartphone manufacturers and wireless carriers who adopt it to modified it according to their own liking. The one sold in the U.S. is different from the one sold in Japan, and so on forth. That's why I told 'mikemaxwell' up there to ask to his wireless carrier, in this case is DoCoMo, about all of his software related questions directly to the company. Got it you smug?!?

So those are just so-so questions, do you know why there's no one really bothered answering in this forum? Because most of users out there buy it right away instead of keep on asking in every possible Android forums, that's it: buy it, try it, learn it, and use it. Why can't you just do that huh? Are you stubborn or something like that? Or are you too shy to ask your mother to buy one?

Heck, if you can't buy an Android-based smartphone, then why don't you just keep sticking your short dick to your lame Nokia phones?!? Stop asking around about Android's features and new Android smartphones (such as Motorola Cliq, Samsung Galaxy, etc) where you often talk like you're interested, but in reality you just want to show off to everyone how you love Nokia E71/72 by comparing it to Android phones. Bah, what a hypocrite!

For others who haven't know about how hypocrite is our little Mr. Andreas Nokia-fanboy Miller, check it out here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-i7500/ ... rface.html

Yo, shameless Nokia-fanboy, these are not the forums for you so you better get the fuck your sorry ass out!
Those good fellas at Android Forums.com were kind enough to diligently answer your whinings, where in the end you admitted that you're "screwed". How pathetic is that?! LOL

You, yourself love to use harsh language, so don't try to act innocent. If you have a bone to pick with me, then why don't you just do that with your dog. I'm sure it won't mind for another round of an anal fuck session with your crippled cock.

That's it, peace and out motherfucker.

    Hey check this out,
this is another solid proof of how screwed, stupid and pushy are the Swedes:
    http://www.fakesteve.net/2009/12/meanwh ... ng-us.html

    Pathetic ain't it..

    Oh, and one more thing..

I wonder if that is not actually a girl, but instead that's our Mr. Andreas tiny-dickhead Miller, who loves to dress like in stupid female Swedish costume. Man, no wonder he whines and squeals like an anally-gang-raped little girl.

    Peace and out.

Google alerts just alerted me of this conversation using my name. My name is Andreas Miller, i frequently use the username andreas81, and you are quoting my information in the above post, but in this forum I am not andreas81, and I would appreciate it if you would find out who you are really talking to instead of thinking you're some awesome net detective who is able to google someones username and figures that the first result has to be the same person. Whoever andreas81 is, thanks for making me have to go to all my accounts and change my username.
