Anyway - check under Settings > Development > USB debugging. Shall be enabled.

Also, check Application - HTC Sync for Android 2.1 & 2.2

I managed following the suggestions there:
If you cannot see the HTC Sync option when you connect your phone to the computer via USB, please follow the

    Instructions below:

    1. Make sure you select USB Debugging in Settings > Applications > Development before connecting your phone to the computer

    2. Connect you Phone to the PC and wait 20 seconds for your phone to install HTC Sync on your phone.

    3. Unplug the USB sync cable. Wait for 5 seconds. Reconnect the Phone to the PC using the USB cable.

    4. Select “HTC sync” and wait for HTC Sync to recognize your Phone. This process could take up to a minute your first

    time connecting to the computer
thank you it worked for me thx again!

    Cool HTC Wildfire Sync

    Hello Guys,

I especially joined this forum to let you know that this sync mishaps due to wrong information even on HTC WEBSITE (Strange isn't it?)

Anyway the Proper procedure to get proper sync in one go attempt is follow:

    1. Unplug USB cable from Device (if connected)
    2. Then in Wildfire Device goto SETTINGS>APPLICATIONS>DEVELOPMENT
    3. Where you will find "USB DEBUGGING" CHECKED IT
    4. now go back to home screen and ensure that HTC SYNC is running in your pc, before plugging USB Cable to device. wait for few seconds and HTC Sync will ask you device name... GOOD LUCK

Thats not how it works with my windows 7 PC!
I have other USB memory sticks, one for a password/form filling program and the other for my webpages. If either of these are plugged in and active HTC Sync will not work.
    USB debugging needs to be enabled on the phone then without other USB sticks on the PC this is how I get HTC Sync to start;
    1) plug HTC usb cable in
    2) select "HTC Sync" on the phone connection menu that is displayed
    3) DO NOT START HTC Sync on the PC.
    4) wait for the phone to search the PC for the HTC Sync program.
    5) when HTC Sync is found it will start and open the PC HTC Sync program.
    6) then start the sync by either the phone "Sync Now" or the PC program "Sync" button.

This is how I get this software running, BUT,
    I then get an error on the PC in a popup window that states;
"The process stopped because the media was removed or communication with the drive was lost"
when I work out what HTC Sync is trying to do here I will post the answer.
If anyone can shed any light on this please reply.

Just registered to thank you for this advice, I have been painfully trying to sync for two hours (reinstalling HTC Sync, using an other computer, etc...) to no avail and activating the USB debugging sorted out everything !

    Thanks again.

    Hey everyone,
I have stopped using HTC Sync as it is limited with what it can do and doesn't always connect.
I have got an App from Market called MyPhoneExplorer, its installed on your PC as well as your phone. It has so many things it can do that on top of just Sync. Give it a try you won't ever use HTC Sync again.

    For those having problems:
I had the same problem "HTC Sync not found on your PC". I don't know what causes this problem, but I followed the directions given above to no avail.
That was (repeatedly done) all last week.
This afternoon, I plugged my phone in to charge it, and suddenly it connects and auto syncs my music folder... don't know what miracle caused it, but it still won't sync my calendar and contacts, but hey, one down, 2 to go. LoL
    Patience, apparently, is key.
